In Part III of the Hastalakshanadipika special chants (svaras) are mentioned for expressing the emotions of different characters under different circumstances. Toward the end of the section the rhythm and time beats appropriate for different circumstances of the dramatic action are listed.

The first svara mentioned in the Hastalakshanadipika is indalam which is used for vira nayaka or expression of powerful male characters and uttama nayika, powerful female characters. Usha Nangyar recites two verses illustrating indalam. The first of these comes from Surpanakhankam and is Rama’s sloka. The second of the illustrations using indalam is also Rama’s sloka but from Anguliyankam.
